We chose to explore the collective noun Brood of Chicks because my partner Sarah recently began raising chicks so that she could enjoy fresh, organic eggs and also the chicks are so darn cute.

We always like to include different opportunities to learn so we came up with a few activities for the kids.

Materials you will need to explore collective nouns with a brood of chicks:

• Nest for the Chicks (Download our free printable)
• Craft Sticks 
• Chicks (Download our free printable)
• Dice
• Glue 

Instructions for exploring our collective nouns counting game:

1. Print out the nest and the chicks. We used card stock so the game would be more durable.
2. Cut the dotted lines on the nest and glue onto another piece of paper.
3. Cut out the chicks and decorate.
4. Glue the chicks onto the popsicle sticks.
5. Have the kids roll the dice and put the matching number of chicks in the nest.
6. Talk about it: If you rolled a 1, is that a brood or just a chick?
7. Extending the game: Print out two sets of the nest and chicks. Have them roll the dice to see how many chicks to put in the nest and then add the number of chicks in both nests. OR compare which nest has fewer or more chicks.

Instructions for exploring the feelings of a brood of chicks:

1. Print out the nest and the chicks.
2. Cut the dotted lines on the nest and glue onto another piece of paper.
3. Cut out the chicks and decorate.
4. Glue the chicks onto the popsicle sticks.
5. Have the children match the chicks to the correct feeling.
6. Talk about it: Why do they think that chick looks happy? Sad? What might make them feel that way?

You can also use the chicks to play pretend. Act out the feelings. Recreate your favorite stories about chicks.
